Walter Chlysta, MD, FACS, FASMBS
Dr. Walter J. Chlysta earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Pre-medicine at Kent State University. He then earned his Doctorate of Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine where he graduated Cum Laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at Akron General Medical Center where he was named Chief Surgical Resident. Dr. Chlysta is a Clinical Associate Professor of General Surgery at Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Medical University and a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Toledo Medical School. He has achieved Fellowship status in The American College of Surgeons and is also a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons. He also is a member of The Society of Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
In addition to offering minimally invasive General Surgical procedures, Dr. Chlysta focuses on minimally invasive weight loss surgery and Heartburn surgery. He was one of the first surgeons to introduce minimally invasive bariatric surgery to Northeast Ohio and was the first surgeon to perform minimally invasive weight loss surgery in Summit County. He has personally performed over 1,000 bariatric procedures with excellent results.
Tonya Thomas, MSN, CNP, CBN
Tonya Thomas, MSN, CNP, CBN, earned her Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Malone College and her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Kent State University. Thomas gained experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Portage Community Health Resources providing primary care to patients of all ages. She is a Certified Bariatric Nurse and previously served as the Clinical Program Coordinator of Akron General's Bariatric Center, while teaching pre-operative educational classes alongside a dietician. Thomas has provided care for hematology and oncology patients, including chemotherapy administration and patient education.
Nancy Azar, MS, RD, LD
Nancy Azar serves as the dietitian through the Bariatric and Heartburn Center, Western Reserve Hospital and through the Department of Endocrinology, Hudson Specialty Center. She has experience in weight loss and weight management, adult obesity, bariatric surgery (before and after care), cardiovascular health, metabolic syndrome, Renal, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, diabetes, GERD, and general wellness. Azar holds a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from the University of Akron. She is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Nancy has spoken at conferences, workshops, and luncheons to educate on diet and nutrition.
