COMMON CAUSES OF PAIN

LOW BACK PAIN

Low back pain affects 80% of all Americans at some point in our lives and can be very disabling, causing daily pain and emotional suffering. Back pain may arise from the lumbar spine, back muscles, or the sacroiliac and hip joints. The best treatment approach is to first identify the cause of pain. Many treatment options are available, including medications, injections, physical therapy and counseling. Surgery is usually the last resort.

SPINAL STENOSIS

Spinal stenosis is a medical condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the spinal cord and nerves in the back. This is usually due to spinal degeneration that occurs with aging, and can occur at any level of the spine, most commonly in the neck or lower back. Lumbar spinal stenosis results in low back pain as well as pain or abnormal sensations in the legs, thighs, feet or buttocks, or loss of bladder and bowel control. This is worse with walking or standing and better with rest and sitting. Treatment options can include medications, physical therapy, injections or surgery.

DEGENERATIVE DISC DISEASE/BULGING DISCS

Degeneration of the intervertebral disc, often called "degenerative disc disease" (DDD) of the spine, is a condition that may be painful and can greatly affect the quality of one's life. While disc degeneration is a normal part of aging and for most people is not a problem, for certain individuals a degenerated disc can cause severe, constant chronic pain. This can be pain in the back that worsens with prolonged sitting, sneezing or coughing. Degenerated discs can also herniate or bulge, pressing on nerves in the back, causing severe leg pain, numbness and weakness. Treatment options can include medications, physical therapy, injections and surgery.

NECK PAIN

As with back pain, neck pain can be due to a number of factors, including degeneration and bulging of discs in the neck, joints in the neck or chronic muscular pain. It is not uncommon to also have severe headaches, shoulder and arm pain with these conditions. Many treatment options are available for neck pain. Treatment options can include medications, physical therapy, nerve blocks and Botox injection. Surgery is usually the last resort.

FAILED BACK SYNDROME OR POST-LAMINECTOMY SYNDROME

Failed back syndrome (FBS) is a well-recognized complication of surgery of the spine. Some patients do not see improvement in their back, neck or leg pain after surgery. This can result in severe long-term pain and disability. We offer many treatments for Failed Back Syndrome, including medications, nerve blocks, injections, physical therapy and spinal cord stimulation.

FIBROMYALGIA

Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by chronic widespread pain and sensitivity throughout the body and can be accompanied by severe fatigue, sleep difficulties and joint stiffness. Often people who suffer from this condition see every aspect of their life affected. There are many treatment options available, including medications, physical therapy and pain counseling.

HEADACHES

Headaches come in many different forms, from migraines to tension headaches to cluster headaches to trigeminal neuralgia (dysfunction of nerves in the head). Whatever headache you may have, many people have failed conservative treatment options and suffer on a daily basis. At the Center for Pain Medicine, we have pioneered various techniques, including head and neck injections, nerve stimulation and radiowave ablation. These interventions are offered by only a handful of centers across the country. Often, both medical and interventional techniques can be used to reduce your pain and improve your function.

DIABETIC NEUROPATHY

This is a condition that can commonly result from Diabetes. Damage to small blood vessels can result in nerve damage, producing severe pain in the hands and feet. At the Center for Pain Medicine, we have many treatments and techniques available, including medications, injections and spinal cord stimulation, to treat this debilitating condition.

PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE

Do you have low blood flow to your legs, causing severe pain and ulcers? Have you been told that you are not a surgical candidate for bypass surgery?

When you have severe disease of the blood vessels in your legs, this can cause severe pain and disability. We offer many treatments that can reduce your pain, and even possibly increase blood flow back into your legs.

Treatment options include; medications, injections, sympathetic nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulation.

CHRONIC JOINT PAIN

Widespread joint pain can be caused by a variety of conditions, from the aging wear-and-tear of osteoarthritis to inflammatory or auto-immune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. At the Center for Pain Medicine, we offer many treatments for isolated or widespread joint pain, and we work with other specialists to improve your daily pain and function. We pioneered joint injections under direct vision with ultrasound rather than the traditional blind joint injections. By doing the joint injection with ultrasound guidance, we ensure that the medication is indeed inside the joint and this will result in a less painful injection and a much better outcome.
