Artistic Work Descriptions:
“Twilight Breeze” and “Spring”: These pieces are part of a collection where Michael examines the impact of mental health on his perceptions of the world around him and how that may differ from others’ perspectives. “Spring” is from a series titled “Seasons of Mental Health,” where Michael explores the clarity with which others seem to define the world versus his struggle to see things in the same resolute manner. In this work, the tree symbolizes steadfast truths and institutions, the flowers represent Michael and his family, and the air, leaves, and debris embody the overlooked possibilities.
“2459 Whitelaw” and “Love & Justice”: These De Stijl landscape paintings distill scenes to their essence, capturing moments in time and space by their core elements. “2459 Whitelaw” is part of a series documenting the homes Michael and his spouse have shared. This painting fondly recalls their time on Whitelaw St. in Cuyahoga Falls, with its brick walls, dried summer lawn, and mossy tree in the front yard.
“Migraine in Luino”: This piece is from a series exploring Michael’s experience with migraine. Using various media and techniques, this series seeks to convey his evolving understanding of the condition while highlighting the continued challenges it brings. “Migraine in Luino” reflects a memory from 2017 where, when working on a video shoot in Luino, Italy, Michael experienced the Aura phase of a migraine, affecting his vision. Despite the swirling obstacles and pain, he remained focused on his work, finding moments of joy and gratitude for the beautiful Italian lake and Swiss mountains.
